Did you know?! Fun Hack Fact Friday Featuring a Challenge Winner

Did you know?!

To build something great, sometimes it takes a village!

Stuart Pocklington, Grand Prize Winner of last year’s Alexa Skills Challenge: Multimodal for his skill “Loop-It” has a few tips for you as you build your Alexa skill!

When you decide that you want to enter the competition, make sure you join the Slack channel. You will be joined by lots of other developers who will be amazing at helping you when you get stuck, they will help bounce ideas around, and will generally great people to know and to network with. You will also get first class support from the Devpost staff, and there will likely be some Amazon Alexa evangelists popping up there to help you also.

Another thing you should do is to look out for the Alexa developer Twitch streams. You will get to see hands on coding, concepts will be explained, and you can ask questions on the stream to get them answered there and then.

Read the competition rules, then read them again. The rules will tell you everything you need to know about what is expected from the Alexa skill that you will be developing, and what you need to do for the submission. For example, If it says the video should be no longer than five minutes, don’t be caught out by submitting a video any longer than that.

Try to submit your skill and competition submission as soon as you can. You will get the opportunity to make changes to your skill during the competition, and having your skill live and being able to study how users interact with it, will help you make changes that improve the experience and give you ideas for additional features that you can add.

Finally, feel free to contact me as I will be more than happy to help where I can.”

Do you have a tip you’d like to share with your fellow devs?  Be sure to join the community and share it in the Slack Channel, we know they’ll appreciate it!
